Soon after the Presidential Election, the Babangida administration annulled the election results. This led to his resignation after widespread protests and an Interim National Government, led by Ernest Shonekan took power.
This was shortly followed by a coup by General Sani Abacha.
Sani Abacha was a Nigerian Army officer and politician who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998 thereby suspending the civilian assembly during this period.
