These elections were held during the military regime of General Sani Abacha in which all political parties participating were affiliated with the government while the true opposition was prevented from participating in the poll. The results above are based on figures released by the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON) and are likely incomplete. Voter turnout was extremely low and the result was soon after annulled by the authorities.
